To make sure you're just as excited about putting on your
jacket next winter, we've got all the information you need to keep it looking its best. From general care instructions to a piece-by-piece breakdown, here's how we recommend you take care of your jacket so it lasts for years to come. If you need a quick reference, you can always find washing instructions on the white label inside the jacket.
General tips for extending the life of your jacket
Wash less
This piece of advice is good for your coat and the planet. Try to wash your jacket only when absolutely necessary. This will help reduce wear and tear and conserve water. For a messy jacket that's had a good adventure, try washing it on the spot with a damp rag or sponge instead of throwing it in the washing machine.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you put your jacket for a spin:
Wash your jacket inside and out.
Choose a small amount of eco-friendly biodegradable detergent that won't do any harm if it gets into our waterways. (Bonus points if you skip the single-use plastic container.)
If appropriate, put the jacket in a laundry bag to prevent fraying.
Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets
We recommend against using fabric softeners and dryer sheets for several reasons. While these can add softness to a garment, they do so by depositing a waxy agent on the surface of the fabric. These single-use products create unnecessary waste and release potentially harmful chemicals into the air. In addition, waxy residues are not good for the longevity of the coat.
To dry
If your jacket gets wet while you're wearing it (which is pretty much what your raincoat gives), be sure to leave it in an open area to dry before putting it away.
Now that you know the general how-to, use these quick tips to keep your jacket looking new year after year, and let us know if you have any questions or want to buy a new jacket.
